The language of instruction of the department I have chosen is English, is it compulsory to study preparatory school?
Students who prefer departments whose course language is English are required to study preparatory school. However, students who want to be exempt from preparatory classes must fulfil at least one of the following conditions:
- To have scored 70 or above out of 100 points in the foreign language preparatory proficiency exam of the University at the beginning of the academic year
- To complete the last three years in a country where the foreign language, determined as the language of education, is spoken as the mother tongue, in secondary education institutions that provide education in the mother tongue of the relevant country.
- To get at least 60 points from the Foreign Language Proficiency Level Assessment Exam (YDS) or an equivalent score from a national/international exam.
- To have successfully completed the relevant foreign language preparatory class in the last two years or to have passed the relevant foreign language preparatory class proficiency exam. This period is three years for students enrolled with external and lateral transfer. Within the scope of this situation, the exemption decision is made by the University Administrative Committee.
Students who apply for exemption must submit the relevant documents to the secretariat of the School of Foreign Language at least one week before the proficiency exam of foreign language preparatory class.

Which campus is my department located in?
IGU Civil Engineering Department carries out its educational activities in Tower (J-Block). Faculty members' rooms and the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture are located on the 19th floor of the Tower.
Does my department have accreditation?
IGU Civil Engineering Department's Turkish and English programs are accredited by the US-based ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC).
Can I be exempted from the courses I have taken from different universities before?
Students who enrolled in the university with central placement can apply for exemption from the courses they have taken in a previous higher education institution and have been successful / conditionally successful within the dates announced in the academic calendar in the first semester of course registration. The course exemption request will be evaluated by the commission within the scope of the IGU Exemption Procedures and Transfer Principles Directive.
Is there a compulsory internship in my department?
In order to graduate, our students are required to complete 2 compulsory group internships, each of which is 30 working days. Click here for detailed information about internships.
Does my department have contracted places for internship?
Our students find the institution where they will do their internship by themselves. Internships in our curriculum are part of the education process and have an important place in preparing our students for professional life. Therefore, all processes such as finding the field or office where you will do internship, contacting company officials or employees, determining the projects you can do internship are all processes that should be carried out by the student and are very important in adapting students' human relations and social skills to professional life. Therefore, we want our students to manage this process by guiding and informing them in this process.
How many credits do I need to complete to graduate?
The number of credits required for graduation is 147. You can get more detailed and up-to-date information by examining the curriculum.
Is there an attendance requirement?
Each student is obliged to attend lectures, practices, laboratories, projects, seminars, workshops, internships, graduation studies and similar studies for the semester in which they will attend. In our university, there is an attendance requirement for at least 70% of the theoretical courses and at least 80% of the applications and laboratories. Detailed information about the attendance requirement can be found in the IGU Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations.
I got a medical report during the exam period, can I take the make-up exam?
Students who cannot take the midterm exams due to health problems are given the right to take a make-up exam with the decision of the relevant board of directors, provided that they obtain their health permits from full-fledged state hospitals, university hospitals or family health centers in the provinces where the University units are located. For detailed and up-to-date information, you can review the IGU Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations .
Do you have summer school?
There is a summer school at our university, and it is held within the dates previously announced in the academic calendar. Detailed information about summer school can be found in the Summer School Directive .
Can I do Double Major while studying in IGU Civil Engineering undergraduate program?
Yes, you can. Istanbul Gelisim University offers a double major program free of charge to its students. Students who have a GPA of 2.90 out of 4.00 in their major program and who are in the 20% success rate in their undergraduate/pre-degree program are entitled to apply to the second major diploma program free of charge. Students who successfully complete the double major program and are entitled to two undergraduate degrees are awarded two undergraduate diplomas. Can I benefit from Erasmus+ program while studying at IGU Civil Engineering undergraduate program?
Yes, you can. Students at Istanbul Gelisim University can participate in the Erasmus+ program. They are paid a certain monthly grant in the currency of the countries they will be travelling to. Click here for detailed information about Erasmus.

Can you give general information about civil engineering?
The most basic needs of living things are water, accommodation and transportation.
- Civil Engineering, perhaps the oldest branch of engineering in the world, is the branch of engineering that has been constantly developing and open to developments since the day humanity existed and will continue to exist as long as human beings live; It undertakes the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructures that will meet the basic needs of people efficiently, economically and quickly.
- Civil engineer is a branch of engineering that undertakes the design and construction of the transmission line for the water to reach the houses and workplaces, starting with the design of wells and dams that will meet the water needs of people. It is also a branch of engineering that undertakes the design and construction of projects for the removal of wastewater in homes and workplaces from underground with the help of pipes.
- It is a branch of engineering that undertakes and supervises the dimensioning and construction process of structures such as houses, hotels, workplaces, factories, power plants that will provide shelter and other needs of living beings under all kinds of loads (earthquake, wind, tsunami, wave loads, etc.) in order to remain in balance.
One of the most basic needs of people is transportation. In addition, the transportation of produced goods and food to the demanded regions is very important for the country's economy. Transportation takes place in the form of home-work, work-shopping, home-hospital, home- school, etc. within the city. Civil engineer undertakes the geometric and superstructure design, construction and maintenance of highways in the city. In addition, it produces solutions with intersection arrangements, traffic signalization and intelligent transportation systems that will shorten the time spent in traffic.

Istanbul Gelisim University Department of Civil Engineering was established in 2011 and has produced 620 graduates to date. Our graduates work in the public and private sectors and in their own workplaces. Our department has structural, geotechnical and hydraulic laboratories. Currently, there are 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 10 assistant professors and 2 research assistants in our department. There are two programs in our department. The education language of the English Civil Engineering program is 100% English, while the education language of the Turkish program is 100% Turkish. Our curriculum includes:
- 25% of science courses (math, physics, chemistry, etc.)
- 15% of personal development courses / social sciences courses. The vocational weight of our curriculum consists of courses covering building materials, structural mechanics, soil mechanics, highway engineering, railway engineering, water structures, respectively. General grouping of the courses of our curriculum,
- 35% of basic engineering courses / vocational courses
- 25% of elective vocational courses.
25% of our curriculum consists of elective courses and is designed to allow students to focus on different sectors/qualifications in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades in line with their own tendencies.

Our graduates are trained to work in any country in the world. The field of Civil Engineering is quite wide. In general, there is an incomplete understanding that civil engineers are only involved in housing construction. However, civil engineers are also involved in infrastructure projects such as water structures, highways, railways, airports, pipelines, etc. In short, civil engineers are involved in the design, construction and maintenance of all kinds of infrastructure projects.
Due to the fact that our country is located in the earthquake zone, the reinforcement of old buildings or their reconstruction through urban transformation is among the priorities of governments and municipalities. In this context, new buildings will replace the existing building stocks today and in the future. Therefore, there will be job opportunities in construction projects in every corner of our country, especially in Istanbul. In addition, renovation or reinforcement of bridges, reinforcement or reconstruction of existing highways and railways to withstand earthquakes will be one of the important business lines in the coming years.
Turkish contractors are undertaking the construction of a large number of projects in both developing and developed countries with the experience gained in large projects both in our country and abroad. Our graduates have the opportunity to work abroad in projects undertaken by Turkish Contractors. In fact, as in all engineering, civil engineering is mainly a knowledge-intensive work and physical/physical work is in the background.
