Prof. Aylin Ece KAYABEKİR on the structural and cost optimization of castellated steel beams with circular and hexagonal openings has been published in the Q4-indexed journal Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Engineering and Computational Mechanics.

The article titled “Failure-Guided Optimisation of Castellated Steel Beams with Circular and Hexagonal Openings,” co-authored by Assoc. Prof. Ahmad Reshad NOORI and Assoc. Prof. Aylin Ece KAYABEKİR, faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department at Istanbul Gelisim University, has been published in the Q4-indexed journal Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Engineering and Computational Mechanics.

The study, investigates the optimization of structural performance and cost efficiency of castellated steel beams with circular and hexagonal web openings. The research aims to minimize construction costs while satisfying strength and serviceability requirements for steel beams with different spans.

Five metaheuristic optimization algorithms were employed to evaluate castellated beams across six different spans ranging from 300 to 800 cm. The cross-sectional geometries, potential failure mechanisms and structural responses of beams with circular and hexagonal openings were investigated to determine optimal design parameters. Sensitivity analyses, progressive failure analyses and finite element analyses of selected critical configurations were also conducted to support the findings.

The study highlights the importance of considering structural safety and potential failure mechanisms alongside economic optimization in the design of castellated steel beams. The proposed framework is expected to contribute to more efficient material utilization, reduced construction costs and the development of safe and economical steel structural systems.

The Civil Engineering Department congratulates Assoc. Prof. Ahmad Reshad NOORI and Assoc. Prof. Aylin Ece KAYABEKİR on their valuable scientific contribution and wishes them continued success in their academic studies.
