Following the announcement of the results of the university exam, many students faced the uncertainty and anxiety that comes with university placement results. Expert Psychologist Gizem Açıkgöz said, “Having a high level of anxiety during the additional preference period, experiencing confusion in this process, not knowing what to do are normal emotional states brought by the process.”
What are your recommendations for students during the additional preference period?
Dear prospective students, I would like you to know that having a high level of anxiety during the additional preference period, experiencing confusion in this process and not knowing what to do are normal emotional states brought by the process. Even though the additional preference process may feel like the last chance and perhaps the end of the road, this may be the beginning of a path to the university steps. I recommend you to get support from expert preference counselors to make the right choice.
What should prospective students who will make additional preferences pay attention to when choosing a university to add to their preference list?
Prospective students may find it difficult to manage their anxiety during this period and as a result, they may choose departments and professions that are not suitable for their academic achievements and personality traits. Your priority should not be to settle in a university or a department. Your priority should be to study the profession of your dreams at the right university. I recommend you to search for universities that offer internationally valid diploma opportunities, will open a door abroad with Erasmus+ and have accredited departments. In addition to this, you should not forget that the academic staff has a great influence on the university you study at, while benefiting from DMP (Double Major Program) and Minor Program opportunities. Our students should take into consideration that the universities and departments they will choose will affect their career and lifestyle. They should make their choices by considering the conditions of the year they will graduate, not the conditions of today.
Should I make an additional preference or leave it to next year?
When making an additional choice, it is important that the student is determined about which department they want to choose. Afterwards, the opportunities offered by universities should be evaluated and if there is a suitable option, I recommend making an additional choice.
If you cannot choose the undergraduate department you want to prefer, associate degree programs can be preferred and you can complete associate degree programs to undergraduate programs with Vertical Tranfer Exam (DGS). In addition, you should not forget that universities have transfer opportunities. You can also meet with the transfer departments before making a preference.
Choosing a profession is one of the critical periods in an individual's life and the student should investigate all options and make the decision completely on his/her own.
