Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım Wins First Prize in National R\&D and Innovation Competition! Dr. Mert Yıldırım, a faculty member in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU), Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, has achieved significant success with his advanced materials technology project developed under the circular economy approach. Yıldırım was awarded the first prize in the “Academician Category” at the 5th National Industry-Oriented R&D and Innovation Project Competition, organized by the Adana Hacı Sabancı Organized Industrial Zone (AOSB) Directorate.


Ranked First Among 182 Projects

The competition, organized with the aim of integrating new technologies into industry, strengthening university-industry collaboration, and promoting a culture of innovation, once again attracted significant interest from across Turkey this year. A total of 182 projects from 62 different universities were submitted and underwent a rigorous evaluation process.

Projects were assessed using a double-blind peer review method, focusing on scientific merit and potential contributions to industrial applications. This approach ensured a transparent and objective evaluation process by keeping the identities of the applicants anonymous.

Emphasis on Circular Economy

The award-winning project by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mert Yıldırım from the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture focuses on the development of sustainable advanced material technologies, grounded in the circular economy model. This approach aims to provide environmentally friendly and economically viable solutions to industry by promoting efficient resource use and the revaluation of waste. Yıldırım’s work stood out for both its academic originality and practical applicability in the industrial sector.

At the award ceremony held on May 21, 2025, in Adana, the winning projects were publicly presented. Dr. Yıldırım received his award from Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar. The event attracted significant attention from industry representatives, academics, and local administrators.
