A research article titled “Parameterized Clearance Cost-Shaping for Any-Angle Planning: Quantifying Safety–Efficiency Trade-Offs on Grid Maps”, co-authored by Res. Asst. Tunay ACIMAN from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, has been published in the Q1-ranked journal Applied Sciences.
The study introduces a new cost approach for path planning on grid-based maps, where the distance to obstacles is taken into account. With the proposed method, the balance between safety distance and efficiency can be controlled through an adjustable parameter.
In the analyses, several performance criteria were evaluated under different scenarios, including path length, number of turns, violations of safety distance, and the smoothness of the path geometry. The results show that increasing the safety parameter leads to safer and smoother paths. This study is expected to contribute to the literature by offering a safety-focused approach to path planning and optimization problems.
